On October 23, 2025, the two MIRO Innovation Lab scientists Julian Klodmann and Michael Dyck represented the lab at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) as part of the annual lecture series “Introduction to Surgical Robotics.” The lecture, combined with practical exercises, gave students a hands-on introduction to surgical robotics and current research approaches in the field.

During the course, participants learned to analyze the opportunities and challenges of robotic systems in surgical workflows, define requirements for such systems, and develop technical solutions for clinical problems. They also gained insights into current research topics and developed their own concepts for robotic assistance systems in the operating room.

The course is structured into three thematic blocks: from the current state of the art and framework conditions, through the fundamentals of robotics, to the design of robotic applications in surgery. It concludes with a clinical project in which students further develop and present their concepts for the use of robotic assistance systems in the operating room.

As part of the course, students also visited the MIRO Innovation Lab at the DLR site in Oberpfaffenhofen, where they experienced the robots and demonstrators live and were able to better connect what they had learned in the lecture with practice. In addition, they took part in an excursion to Medtronic’s new site in Laim as part of the lecture.

Julian Klodmann and Michael Dyck will also be teaching the course again in the upcoming winter semester 26/27.
